I know there are a thousand different ways to be creative – but my favourite is drawing. When I create a logo for one of our clients, it’s always on paper first. Always.
It’s how I see, it’s how I think, it’s how I feel the project. That little scratchy scrap of paper is where the magic is born. Whether the pencils can are rough, ugly, or beautiful, that’s where a lot of the brands I’ve worked on have started. My 8.5″ x 11″ grid paper is essentially a maternity ward for all my client ideas.
This makes that slip of paper eternally valuable to me. This is how my ideas become reality. So many of the sketches wouldn’t hold any value for anyone else; since they can be very rough looking; so I file them away, or sadly say goodbye to them as I move on to another project. Other times, they come to life on the page as fully rendered visuals, and these I store away and wait for the day the project is completed. On that day, when we present the logo in person to the client – I take that drawing out, and I give it to them.
Personally I like that magic that comes with getting an idea from my head, out into the world in a visual way. To me, that’s simply what my creativity is. What adds to the magic is if I get to think of something unique that hasn’t existed before, and create it – and then a client vibes with it….Boom. Day made.
