IF IT AIN’T BROKE, BREAK IT
Repetitive. Routine. Predictable.
More like nightmare.
I learn so much about myself everyday, I like to think we all do. As an entrepreneur, I am constantly finding myself in situations where I’m challenging myself in one way or another, be it my thought process, my tolerance level or sometimes even my own values. There are countless days where I come home and firmly announce my plans to find a career with some “damn routine” because quite honestly, this journey that I’m on leaves me nothing short of exhausted most of the time.
Well while I’m on a roll….the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur are really something else! It’s an ongoing joke in my house, I’m either up all night panicked about how much work we have and how we’re going to manage it or I’m up all night and panicked about how we’re going to get more work. I’m forever thinking, planning, researching, innovating, celebrating or worrying. It’s a real roller-coaster folks.
And the truth is – I absolutely love it.
In fact, I thrive off it and I hope the chaos never stops because when it stops, I fear for the future of my business.
Routine in business can be a real killer on so many levels. I talk to entrepreneurs every day who have lost their spark. I can see it in their eyes and hear it in their voices and sometimes find myself wondering where it went or what they were like when they were new, hungry entrepreneurs.
Why did they start this journey in the first place?
It’s not that their business is struggling, in fact, often times it’s doing fine. I think that’s the very problem, they spend years trying to build a business that can pay the bills and then one day if they’re lucky, it does. It’s fine. They’ve got their regulars, their processes and it’s all just fine. So they coast.
I worry for those businesses. I’m sad for the entrepreneur who lost their spark and I wonder what they’re going to do as more competitors continue to enter the market or more intelligent technology suddenly makes it easier, faster, cheaper to do what they do. I wonder if they think of that. I wonder if they see that with some creativity and spunk they can find that spark again and find new ways to take care of their customers and even attract new ones.
You know that saying, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it? In business, from one entrepreneur to another, I’m inclined to say if it ain’t broke…break the hell out of it.
Ok maybe that’s a bit over the top (it sounded exciting and dramatic so I went with it) but my point is, when things are just coasting along, going swell, hunky dory, don’t settle into it. Challenge yourself. Don’t get comfortable just being good enough. That’s your time to rock it! Enjoy the stability while still looking for ways to be better. Create a new menu item, partner with a new organization, join a new committee, attend a new event, open a new division, get a new office, write a new blog post.
Do something new everyday that scares you.
Stay on top of your game, keep your passion for your business by not settling into routine. The day you find yourself dragging your ass out of bed to go to work is the day you know you lost your way. Splash some water on your face and break something.
