THE POWER OF PROMOTIONS
Everyone has been involved in a social media promotion at one point or another.
Whether it was a “Like our page to win!” or a “Share this post to win!” we’ve all been there, where we’ve joined in for the opportunity to win. But then Facebook became stricter in their regulations that banned these types of promotions and we all secretly breathed a sigh of relief for our busy newsfeeds.
Now, there’s a new type of promotion in town that has become increasingly popular, one where you tag your friends in the comments of the promotional post and the more friends you tag, the more entries you receive.
At first glance, as a business you might be thinking – that’s genius! What a great way to reach a ton of people! Take a step back though and look at it from the other side – from the point of view of the audience that’s constantly being tagged in comments they have absolutely no interest in.
Think of the emotional connection that you’re creating with that person – one of annoyance before they even know who you are. Is it worth it?
Heck, I’m not saying to never have promotions on social media. I love free stuff as much as the next person, but there are ways to go about it that will help you organically expand your reach without annoying your market or their friends.
Instead, when creating a social media promotion, consider how you can engage with the audience – ask them for their opinions or to help you create something new. You may not reach tens of thousands of people, but the ones you do reach will genuinely like you and want to connect with you, and isn’t that so much better?
