WHERE DID MY FRIENDS GO?
Where did my friends go?
I joined Facebook in March of 2007 (wow, that’s over 7 years ago!) and at the time, like many people, I loved finding new people, connecting with old friends and family and seeing what’s going on in their lives on a regular basis. It was a great place to be.
I had the same reaction when I first joined Twitter. It was a great place to meet and connect with new people. In fact, I first “met” Kerry Anne on Twitter. It was so fun to meet in person and say I know you, you’re @InsightPEI!
So where did my friends go?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed more and more of my news feed is filled with my friends as salespeople. It might be a cosmetic product, a food product, real estate or jewelry, whatever it is I feel they’re less like them and more like an advertisement.
Now I get it, I own a business and there are times when you want to share exciting announcements or successes about your business – it’s a part of your life, mine too. And as a friend I want to hear about them too! But what I don’t want is to be sold to when I am trying to visit with my friends on Facebook.
I think of it like this – if Facebook is for being social and connecting with friends (which is how I see it), then it’s like going to a party or social gathering with your friends every time you sign on.
And just imagine if you went to that party and every time you did what you heard from your friends was “wanna buy my new XXXX?” After awhile I will avoid you at the party.
But I don’t want to do that, we had a connection and I still want to hear about the great things happening with my friends. So what can we do?
Well, what we typically encourage people to consider is setting up a company page. It’s simple, anyone can do it and then people make a choice to follow your business page and receive the business/sales information they are excited about. This means those people that are receiving the posts are truly interested, which is actually more beneficial to your business anyhow.
It’s a win/win for everyone – and plus I get my friends back!
