YOUR BRAND AND YOUR PEOPLE
Your employees are a direct reflection of your brand. How they answer the phone, manage problems and treat one another will all impact your brand deeply.
So, how do you build your team to align with your brand?
The last thing you need is to surround yourself with a bunch of people who are just like you. Doing this limits perspectives and client types (let’s face it, not everyone will be drawn to your way of thinking and doing). You need diversity in your workplace.
So how do you hire people who fit your brand, but still offer varying perspectives and personality types?
Hire based on values.
What are their beliefs around client relations and collaboration? How do they manage conflict? What is their work ethic?
In interviews, try asking questions like “Tell me about a time when you and a client had different creative opinions. How did you manage that?” or “Talk to me about how you manage conflict in the workplace?” One of my personal favourites is “Tell me about a time when you had to juggle many projects. What steps did you take to ensure success?”
If you do find yourself with a hire that you’re having difficulty with, ask yourself if it’s a skill-based problem or a values-based problem: one is much easier to fix than the other.
